Course: AI Governance & Policy Frameworks Pathway: Governance (Paid) Level: Advanced Estimated Reading Time: 10 minutes
AI governance is being shaped in real time by regulators, legislators, and standards bodies around the world. If you're responsible for AI governance in your organisation, you need to understand the global landscape — not because you're necessarily subject to every jurisdiction's rules, but because these frameworks set the direction of travel. What happens in Brussels and Washington today will influence Wellington tomorrow.
This lesson maps the key global frameworks and draws out the practical implications for New Zealand organisations.
The European Union's AI Act entered into force on 1 August 2024, with provisions taking effect in phases from February 2025 through August 2026. The Act becomes fully applicable on 2 August 2026, marking a critical deadline when comprehensive enforcement begins across the EU. Even if your organisation has no European operations, the EU AI Act matters because it's setting the global standard — much as GDPR did for data privacy.
