When GitHub Copilot launched in 2021, it changed what people expected from a code editor. Suddenly, your IDE could suggest entire functions, not just variable names. It wasn't perfect — and it still isn't — but it set the standard that every other AI coding assistant is now measured against.
If you're going to understand AI coding tools, you need to understand Copilot. Even if you end up choosing something else, knowing what Copilot does well (and where it falls short) gives you a baseline for evaluating everything in this space.
